What is Literacy?
Literacy requires the ability to read and write, in part. Anyone can learn to read and write, however, I believe literacy goes a step further. In my opinion, one must be able to take a reading, and comprehend it; be able to make a meaning of what has been written down. One must understand what they are reading and be able to look at and understand the different views that come along with it. One can simply write words down on a piece of paper, but the thought that goes behind it, is what makes the writer literate. One must be able to take their thoughts as well as the thoughts of others, and be able to provide meaning. The term “literate” and “literacy,” I feel, cannot be defined by a single meaning; I believe it incorporates a number of different meanings.
